All cryptocurrencies, not Bitcoin (BTC) are referred to as altcoins. Since most cryptocurrencies are branched from one of the two, some people consider altcoins to be all cryptocurrencies other than Bitcoin and Ethereum (ETH). Some cryptocurrencies employ distinct consensus techniques to validate transactions, create new blocks, or set themselves apart from Bitcoin and Ethereum by offering extra features or functions. 
Alternative cryptocurrency ventures abound in the market. Coins other than Bitcoin are called "altcoins" or alternative coins. After Bitcoin was developed in 2008 and released in 2009, it emerged in the market in 2011.

Altcoin, which stands for "alternative to Bitcoin," originally referred to any digital currency released after Bitcoin's popularity.  But in recent times, the word "altcoin" has come to refer to more and more cryptocurrencies than just Ethereum and Bitcoin.  There are thousands of altcoins available now, and new ones are being introduced every day.
